Janev or Yajnopavitam is a sacred thread worn by Hindu males during their coming-of-age ceremony called Upanayana. It is made of cotton or silk and is usually composed of three strands, which represent the three Hindu deities: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. It is worn diagonally over the left shoulder and under the right arm. The wearing of the janev is considered a sacred duty and is believed to help one connect with the divine, understand and follow the principles of Hinduism, and gain knowledge and wisdom.
